Outdoor Recreation: Your Backyard Is Extraordinary

🌲 Algonquin Provincial Park

One of Ontario’s most iconic wilderness parks sits approximately 45 minutes from Petawawa and 60 minutes from Pembroke. Algonquin offers 7,630 square kilometres of lakes, rivers, forests, and wildlife — canoe routes, backcountry camping, world-class fishing, moose sightings, and some of Canada’s most spectacular fall foliage. Living in the Ottawa Valley means Algonquin is not a once-a-year vacation. It is a long weekend destination.

🚣 The Ottawa River

The Ottawa River runs along the southern boundary of Renfrew County and through the heart of the region. It is one of Canada’s great rivers — offering world-class whitewater in the Pembroke area (the Ottawa River is one of North America’s premier whitewater destinations), fishing for walleye and bass, leisurely paddling on calm stretches, and spectacular sunsets over the Quebec shoreline.

🎿 Winter Recreation

The Ottawa Valley fully embraces winter rather than enduring it. Snowmobile trails connect across the entire region through hundreds of kilometres of groomed OFSC-sanctioned trails. Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing on dozens of frozen lakes, and skating on the Petawawa River are part of the rhythm of life here. Mount Pakenham is within easy driving range for downhill skiing.

🎣 Fishing & Hunting

Renfrew County is one of Ontario’s premier hunting and fishing destinations. The hundreds of lakes and rivers in the region support excellent sport fishing for walleye, bass, pike, and trout. White-tailed deer, moose, and wild turkey hunting are part of the culture here in ways that simply are not the case in southern Ontario. For outdoors enthusiasts, the Ottawa Valley is a dream to live in.

Community, Culture & Events

The Ottawa Valley has a strong cultural identity — Celtic and Irish heritage roots, a vibrant arts scene, and a genuine community spirit that you feel at every local event.

🎵

Ottawa Valley Roots Music

The Valley is known across Canada for its fiddle music tradition. The Ottawa Valley Fiddle and Step Dancing Association and local festivals keep this heritage alive year-round.

🏒

Hockey Community

Pembroke has the Pembroke Lumber Kings in the Central Canada Hockey League. Local minor hockey, rep hockey, and recreational leagues are central to community life — especially in Petawawa and Pembroke.

🛒

Local Markets & Farms

Pembroke Farmer’s Market and local farm stands keep the region connected to its agricultural roots. Fresh produce, local honey, maple syrup, and farm-direct meat are part of everyday life here.

🎭

Arts & Theatre

Pembroke’s Festival Theatre and the Algonquin Theatre in Huntsville (day trip) bring live performance to the Valley. Local galleries, artist studios, and the Bonnechere Museum celebrate the region’s history and creativity.

🏕️

Whitewater & Adventure

The Ottawa River hosts world-class whitewater rafting with operators like Wilderness Tours and OWL Rafting. The Madawaska River provides additional kayaking and rafting options. Adventure tourism is a serious industry here.

🕍

Military Community Events

CFB Petawawa’s military community creates a unique, welcoming energy. Military family support programs, base events, and the cultural diversity that comes with Canada’s military presence enrich the entire region.
