Living in Pembroke, Ontario – What You Need to Know

I was born and raised in the Ottawa Valley, and I can honestly say there’s no place I’d rather call home. Whether you’re thinking of relocating to Pembroke, or you’re just curious about life here, let me give you the insider’s view.

A True Community Feel

Pembroke is one of those towns where people actually know their neighbours. Doors are open, people wave from their driveways, and community events draw real crowds. Whether it’s the Pembroke Lumber Kings hockey games at the PAACA, the Festival of Lights at the waterfront, or any of the local markets and farmer’s markets, there’s always something bringing people together. If you’ve been craving that sense of community that’s hard to find in a big city, Pembroke delivers it naturally.

Outdoor Recreation and the Ottawa River

One of the things I love most about living here is the access to the outdoors. The Ottawa River runs right through town, and it’s a playground year-round — kayaking and paddleboarding in summer, skating and snowshoeing in winter. Algonquin Provincial Park is just over an hour away. We have fantastic hiking trails, cycling paths, campgrounds, and fishing spots within minutes of downtown.

Affordable Cost of Living

Let’s be honest: one of the biggest draws to Pembroke is affordability. Compared to Ottawa, Toronto, or even Renfrew, you can get significantly more space, property, and quality of life for your dollar here. Whether you’re a young family looking to stretch your dollar, a retiree looking for peace and quiet, or a remote worker who wants a slower pace, Pembroke makes financial sense.

Schools, Healthcare, and Amenities

Pembroke is the regional hub of Renfrew County. We have Pembroke Regional Hospital (a well-regarded community hospital), a full range of grocery stores and specialty shops, good schools across both English and French-language boards, and a growing local restaurant and café scene. Algonquin College has a campus here too, which brings a younger energy to the community.

Close to Ottawa, But Without the Chaos

Pembroke is roughly 140 km from Ottawa, which is about a 90-minute drive. Many people commute or visit Ottawa regularly for events, concerts, and specialty shopping while enjoying the peace and affordability of living in Pembroke full-time. It really is the best of both worlds.
